NAMES OF GOD
JEHOVAH
(yeh-ho-vaw') – the one who IS; the self-existent one.
IF SOME OF THESE NAMES ARE APPLICABLE TODAY, WHY NOT ALL??
IF HE EVER WAS JEHOVAH-__________, HE IS STILL JEHOVAH-__________!!
1. JEHOVAH-GEMUWLAH (ghem-oo-law’)
– the one who repays.
Old Testament: “…for the LORD God of recompenses shall
surely requite.” (Jeremiah 51:56)
New Testament: “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but
(rather) give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance (is) mine;
I will repay, saith the Lord. (Romans 12:19)
2. JEHOVAH-JIREH (yireh’) –
the Lord who sees (and provides).
Old Testament: “And Abraham called the name of that place
Jehovah jireh: as it is said (to) this day, in the mount of the LORD
it shall be seen. (Genesis 22:14)
New Testament: “But my God shall supply all your need according
to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 4:19)
3. JEHOVAH-NISSI/NICCIY (nis-see’) –
the Lord our banner (victory).
Old Testament: “And Moses built an altar, and called the
name of it Jehovah nissi…” (Exodus 17:15)
New Testament: “But thanks (be) to God, which giveth us
the victory through our Lord Christ Jesus.
(I Corinthians 15:57)
4. JEHOVAH-QADASH (kaw-dash’) –
the Lord who sanctifies/cleans.
Old Testament: “…that (ye) may know that I (am) the
LORD that doth sanctify you. (Exodus 31:13, Leviticus 20:8, Ezekiel
20:10)
New Testament: “By the which we are sanctified through the
offering of the body of Jesus Christ once (for all)”. (Hebrews
10:10)
“But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us
wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption. (I
Corinthians l:30)
5. JEHOVAH-RA-AH/ROHI (raw-aw’) –
the Lord our shepherd.
Old Testament: “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want”.
(Psalm 23:1)
New Testament: “I am the good shepherd, and know my (sheep),
and am known of mine.”
(John 10:14)
6. JEHOVAH-RAPHA (raw-faw’) – the
Lord our healer.
Old Testament: “…for I (am) the LORD that healeth
thee”. (Exodus 15:26)
New Testament: “They that be whole need not a physician,
but they that are sick”. (Matthew 9:12)
7. JEHOVAH-SHALOM (shaw-lome’) –
the Lord IS (our/send) peace.
Old Testament: “Then Gideon built an altar there unto the
LORD, and called it Jehovah-shalom”.
(Judges 6:24)
New Testament: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give
unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let
not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid”. (John 14:27)
8. JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH (‘sham-maw) –
the Lord is there/present.
Old Testament: “…and the name of the city from (that)
day (shall be), the LORD (is) there”.
(Ezekiel 48:35)
New Testament: “Lo, I am with you always, (even) unto the
end of the world. Amen.” (Matthew 28:20)
“…for He God Himself has said, I will not in any way fail
you nor give you up nor leave you without support. (I will) not,
(I will) not, (I will) not in any degree leave you helpless, nor forsake
nor let (you) down (relax my hold on you) - Assuredly not!
So we take comfort and are encouraged and confidently and boldly say,
the LORD is my helper, I will not be seized with alarm—I will
not fear or dread or be terrified. What can man do to me.
(Hebrews 13:5.6)
9. JEHOVAH-TSEBAOTH/TSABA (tsaw-baw’)
– the Lord of hosts.
Old Testament: “The LORD of hosts (is) with us; the God
of Jacob (is) our refuge”. Selah.
(Psalms 46:11)
“….The LORD of hosts mustereth the host of the battle.” (Isaiah
13:4)
New Testament: “Behold the hire of the laborers who have
reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth:
and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of
the Lord of sabaoth”.
10. JEHOVAH-TSIDQUENUW (tsid-kay’noo) – the
Lord our righteousness.
Old Testament: “In those days shall Judah be saved, and
Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this (is the name) wherewith she shall
be called, the LORD our righteousness.” (Jeremiah 33:16, Jeremiah
23:6)
New Testament: “For he hath made him (to be) sin for us,
who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
(II Corinthians 5:21)
